Baked Rigatoni with Meatballs

This is a rich wintery Italian-American preparation that is, frankly, an improvement on my mom's recipe. She wouldn't have gotten as involved, nor would she have used balsamic vinegar, but this is a great recipe. Although there is admittedly a bit of work in preparing this dish, I think it is worth it for two reasons. First, it really tastes great with crusty Italian bread, and is enjoyable to assemble on a blustery cold winter Sunday. Second, if you have leftovers, they make great meatball heros for lunch.
